Journey to Sea Lions
& Penguins
We cruised the famous
Beagle Channel on board a catamaran in search of lounging sea lions and a
penguin colony. At the pier, we met our skipper
and crew, then boarded our vessel and set out into the channel toward its
coastal islands. We stopped beside Isla
de los Pájaros, also known as “Bird Island,” home to steamer ducks, cormorants,
and giant albatross. After time for
photos, we sailed to Isla de Los Lobos, or “Sea Wolves Island,” named after the
sea lions that occupy it. We observed
them up close and heard their barks as they jostled for position on the rocks. We continued to Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse and
gazed up at Argentina’s southernmost structure. Its red-and-white tower stands 33 feet high
and is one of the country’s most photographed landmarks. On our way back to the pier, we passed
Martillo Island, where we observed Magellanic penguins.
