Day 16, Jan 24, 2024 a Day on Moorea, a French Polynesian Island

  Moʻorea , also spelled  Moorea , is a  volcanic island  in  French Polynesia . It is one of the  Windward Islands , a group that is part of the  Society Islands , 11 miles northwest of  Tahiti . The name comes from the  Tahitian  word  Moʻoreʻa , meaning "yellow lizard":  Moʻo  = lizard ;  Reʻa  ( from   reʻareʻa ) = yellow.  An older name for the island is  ʻAimeho , sometimes spelled  ʻAimeo  or  ʻEimeo  (among other spellings that were used by early visitors before Tahitian spelling was standardized). Early Western colonists and voyagers also referred to Moʻorea as  York Island  or  Santo Domingo .  Population is about 20K. On the fifth sea day of this leg, the night before visiting Bora Bora, we were treated to a marvelous 'surf 'n turf" pool-side lobster tail and beef evening meal.   . Bora Bora has a total land area of 12 square miles. The  main island , located about 125 nautical miles northwest of  Papeete , is surrounded by a  lagoon  and a  barrier reef .
