PUERTO MADRYN, ARGENTINA

Due to a pending storm, our captain is skipping this port and heading directly to Falkland Islands. 😕

If it's as bad as it sounds............😃

Puerto Madryn is a city in the province of Chubut in Argentine Patagonia.  It is the capital of the Biedma Department, and has about 93,995 inhabitants according to the last census in 2010.
Puerto Madryn is protected by the Golfo Nuevo, which is formed by the Península Valdés and the Punta Ninfas.  It is an important center for tourists visiting the natural attractions of the Península Valdés and the coast.
A new shopping mall in the city center has helped tourism significantly, making Puerto Madryn a more attractive place for both international and domestic tourists visiting Patagonia.  It is twinned with Nefyn, a small town on the Llŷn Peninsula in North Wales, the result of its enduring link with Welsh culture since the Welsh settlement in Argentina.  The first of a two-Test tour to Argentina by the Wales national rugby union team was played in 2006 in Puerto Madryn, a 27–25 win for Argentina.  Puerto Madryn is home to two football clubs:  Club Social y Atlético Guillermo Brown, who play in Nacional B and Deportivo Madryn that currently play in Torneo Argentino B.

Punta Loma Reserve, Ranch & Ecocentro

We encountered a colony of sea lions, visited a working sheep farm, and learned about marine conservation.  We embarked on a scenic drive to the Punta Loma Reserve, home to a year-round colony of up to 600 South American sea lions. These mammals, which can weigh more than 700 pounds, rest and breed on a pebble beach and can be viewed from the top of a low cliff.  We continued on to the 7,000-acre Estancia San Guillermo sheep ranch to learn about life in the Patagonian countryside. We listened to a talk by the owners and watched a demonstration of sheep shearing by a skilled rancher.  We also met the farm’s other inhabitants, including friendly guanacos, a close relative of the llama. After a snack, we rode back toward Puerto Madryn and called at the Ecocentro, the first of its kind in Argentina.  Through a series of exhibits, we learned about the region’s marine biology, whales, and dolphins.
