Boston, Massachusetts (Day 2)

Walk the Freedom Trail
We walked through Revolutionary-era Boston along the famous Freedom Trail.  We followed an experienced guide past historic landmarks, enjoying colorful commentary along the way.  Our route passed the Massachusetts State House and Park Street Church.  We stopped at the Granary Burying Ground to see the graves of John Hancock, Samuel Adams, and Paul Revere.  We saw the Old Corner Bookstore where Emerson, Longfellow, and Hawthorne once gathered.  At the Old South Meeting House, we heard the story of the Boston Massacre and Boston Tea Party.  We walked past Faneuil Hall into the North End to see the humble house of Paul Revere and the Old North Church from which he hung two lanterns to signal the approach of the British.  Then, we returned to Faneuil Hall’s Quincy Market, with its cobblestone courtyard and promenades.

The Tremont Temple on 88 Tremont Street is a Baptist church in Boston, affiliated with the American Baptist Churches, USA. The existing multi-story structure was designed by architect Clarence Blackall of Boston, and opened in May 1896. It replaced a much smaller, 1827 structure that had repeatedly suffered damage by fires.
The new facility was designed with a large auditorium, ground-floor retail shops, and upper-story offices, all of which could be leased commercially so that the congregation could welcome all worshipers for free.

Parker House rolls are named after the Boston Parker House Hotel where they first originated during the 1870s. Legend has it that a disgruntled hotel baker threw a batch of unfinished rolls into the oven after an altercation with a hotel guest.

When the rolls emerged from the oven, they had a distinct folded “pocketbook” shape that made them light and puffy on the inside, while staying crisp and buttery on the outside.

The oldest printed Parker House Rolls recipe on file is from an April 1874 issue of the New Hampshire Sentinel, and they have been a favorite in homes and restaurants ever since. You can also find them, along with Anadama Bread and fellow Parker House invention Boston Cream Pie on our list of 75 Classic New England Foods.
Make a large batch this fall for a family dinner, or freeze the rolls for a warm, toasted, buttery addition to any meal, at any time.
Are you a fan of Parker House rolls?

Old North Church (officially, Christ Church in the City of Boston), at 193 Salem Street, in the North End, Boston, is the location from which the famous "One if by land, two if by sea" signal is said to have been sent.  This phrase is related to Paul Revere's midnight ride, of April 18, 1775, which preceded the Battles of Lexington and Concord during the American Revolution.

The church is a mission of the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts.  It was built in 1723 and is the oldest standing church building in Boston and a National Historic Landmark.  Inside the church is a bust of George Washington, which Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette, reportedly remarked was the best likeness of the first president he had ever seen.

The Old South Meeting House is a historic Congregational church building located at the corner of Milk and Washington Streets in the Downtown Crossing area of Boston, Massachusetts, built in 1729.  It gained fame as the organizing point for the Boston Tea Party on December 16, 1773.  Five thousand or more colonists gathered at the Meeting House, the largest building in Boston at the time.

Faneuil Hall is a marketplace and meeting hall located near the waterfront and today's Government Center, in Boston, Massachusetts.  Opened in 1743, it was the site of several speeches by Samuel Adams, James Otis, and others encouraging independence from Great Britain.  It is now part of Boston National Historical Park and a well-known stop on the Freedom Trail.  It is sometimes referred to as "the Cradle of Liberty".

Boston's Old City Hall was home to its city council from 1865 to 1969.  It was one of the first buildings in the French Second Empire style to be built in the United States.  After the building's completion, the Second Empire style was used extensively elsewhere in Boston and for many public buildings in the United States, such as the Old Executive Office Building in Washington, D.C., as well as other city halls in Providence, Baltimore, and
Philadelphia.

Condition upon arrival to USA.                      Condition after getting jobs.

The Boston Irish Famine Memorial is a memorial park located on a plaza between Washington Street and School Street in BostonMassachusetts.  The park contains two groups of statues to contrast an Irish family suffering during the Great Famine of 1845–1852 with a prosperous family that had emigrated to America.  Funded by a trust led by Boston businessman Thomas Flatley, the park was opened in 1998.  It has received contrasting reviews and has since been called "the most mocked and reviled public sculpture in Boston."

Currently tied for largest drug store in USA (tied with NYC).  Also site of Irish statues.

Now a museum, this is across street from original meeting house.

Distances to Boston locations are measured from this point.

Day care out for a morning stroll.

Our ship will sail around 2 PM; next stop, New York City.  We will arrive around 7 AM day after tomorrow, Thursday, October 9.
These sun set pictures were taken as we sailed on a narrow canal that saved us hours to avoid going around a land mass between Boston and New York City.  Caught these just in time.
