Sunday, September 1, 2019, Sail away from Greenwich

Greenwich, a borough of London along the Thames River, has a cherished maritime history including the Maritime Greenwich UNESCO Site.  Here-precisely, at the Royal Observatory- the world’s longitude is measure from the prime meridian and Greenwich Mean Time sets the global time standard.

Our cruise ship, anchored on a floating dock of the Thames River at Greenwich, had been turned around at the end of its previous cruise to head down river.

At the port, the clipper ship Cutty Sark, one of Greenwich’s most renowned historic landmarks, is preserved as a fascination museum.
For detailed information about the Cutty Sark sailing ship, you may go to the Internet website https://www.history.co.uk/shows/black-sails/articles/history-of-the-cutty-sark

View down river from our cruise ship.

On our way down river, we see this second largest domed stadium in Great Britain.

Very large and modern buildings below Greenwich on the Thames.

 Very large castles everywhere!

No bridges along the way; this areal tram does the job.

Tug boat to help steer us thru a very narrow breakwater.

Breakwater can quickly be closed if a tidal wave approaches to prevent damage up river.

Old ferry that has seen its better days!

Almost to the open ocean channel between Great Britain and France.

Tomorrow we will visit Dover and Canterbury.  Due to pass the White Cliffs of Dover as we arrive at the dock.
