SIHANOUKVILLE, CAMBODIA
Named for mid 20th century
King Norodom Sihanouk, Cambodia’s coastal town of Sihanoukville is perched on
the end of a scenic elevated peninsula. Its almost uninterrupted stretch of
sandy shores and turquoise waters lend it one of the nation’s most picturesque
settings. This sleepy city was developed
after the French departed, so its streets are lined with less fanciful examples
of New Khmer architecture and traveled by modern-day tuk-tuks, carriages pulled by motorcycle. The city’s many beaches and offshore islands
draw locals and visitors alike, making this one of Cambodia’s prime seaside
resorts. One of its major cultural
sites, the temple of Wat Leu, or “Upper pagoda,” rests on a hill with sweeping
views of Sihanoukville Bay.
Our arrival to Sihanoukville, Cambodia.
Note the construction, similar to what we observed all thru Asia so far.
Our buses and tour guides waiting to take us on our shore excursions.
Our shore excursion of Sihanoukville began with a journey along the coast to the tiny fishing village of Tumnob Rolok, where the pace of life is slow and fishermen prepare the day’s catch for market.
The fishermen begin their daily fishing by leaving the docks around 5 PM, fish most of the night, and return 4-5 AM next morning.
The fish processing plant where ladies wash each fish separately the place them in baskets for shipping to local markets.
Very little refrigeration so ice is the main cooler, for fish and homes.
Propane for home cooking and cooking on fishing boats.
Cleaning and repairing fishing nets.
House on pier with motorcycle, the family wheels.
Egg factory.
Cell phones make noise and have bright, flashing lights. Kids all over the world love.
Local pool hall on the pier.
Taxi service!
Local repair shop.
Generator to operate welder.
Local butcher. Note refrigeration (or lack thereof).
A second posting will follow (too many pictures for a single post).
