Sunday, March 4, 2018, Manila (2 of 2) church & house

Our shore excursion to Manila included a morning tour of old Manila.  Our first blog post of Manila provided photos and narrative of all except the San Augustin Church and the Casa Manila Manila House.  This blog features the two.

San Augustin Church.  This church is one of a few that survived the 85% total destruction of Manila by Japanese and US bombings in World War II.

Wood front door.  There happened to be a funeral on this Sunday morning.
Solid wood front doors.

The Philippines are predominantly Catholic, a carry over from 377 years of Spanish rule that ended in the very late 1800s with the Spanish/American War.

Bell weighs over two tons; down from tower for maintenance of the tower.

Casa Manila patio.  Casa Manila is a museum in Intramuros depicting colonial lifestyle during Spanish colonization of the Philippines.
The museum is the imposing stone-and-wood structure c.1850, one of the grand houses in Barrio San Luis (one of the four original villages of Intramuros) is located across historic San Agustin church and bounded by Calle Real, General Luna, Cabildo and Urdaneta streets.
Casa Manila is a copy of an 1850s San Nicolas House that was once located in Calle Jaboneros.  It was constructed by Imelda Marcos during the 1980s and modeled on Spanish colonial architecture.

"Window panes" are sea shells.

Overhead "fans" are from India; Indian servants pulled the ceiling ropes to move the fans to and fro.
These are paper candy wrappers.  Our guide only knows of one elderly lady that has the skills to use the paper wrappers.  He hopes she can soon teach the skill while she is still able.

Two-hole potty.  There is only one toilet in the very large house.
I can't imagine bathing in either of these!
A real ice box.  Ice was shipped from Massachusetts hundred of years ago; price was very high!  Can you imagine the trip around Cape Horn to Philippines?

We now have three sea days to Shanghai.  We had a day cut out of Manila so we could get to the entrance of the river at Shanghai so we could cross a sand bar at the river's entrance at high tide.
